BREAKING: Cary Fukunaga To Direct BOND 25!
Oh. My. God.
When it was announced last month that director Danny Boyle had left Bond 25 due to the age old reason of “creative differences,” I wasn’t sure what to think. To me, Boyle represented an interesting possibility for the James Bond franchise and a strong choice to helm what is now widely known to be Daniel Craig’s final turn as Agent 007. There were interesting names thrown around in the running, such as Baby Driver‘s Edgar Wright or ’71 director Yann Demange, but no one really felt quite like the sort of home run pick that Boyle did (at least in my humble opinion).
Well, the job vacancy is now filled… and I truly believe EON Production just hit a home run. Longtime franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson announced on Twitter that the new director of Bond 25 is none other than Cary Joji Fukunaga of True Detective and Beast of No Nation fame.
Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig announced today that #Bond25 will begin filming at Pinewood Studios on 4 March 2019 under the helm of director, Cary Joji Fukunaga with a worldwide release date of 14 February 2020. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/Oyzt826sXd

Broccoli and Wilson stated in the announcement:
“We are delighted to be working with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure.“
I couldn’t agree more with the duo. While the Bond franchise has had some great films made over the years, it’s hard to think of a more exciting director choice in its entire fifty-six year long run than Fukunaga. Not even Sam Mendes or Boyle got my heart racing at the possibilities quite like this announcement currently is. His work on the entire first season of True Detective remains some of the finest television crafted in this decade and his film Beast of No Nation was an early success for Netflix in regards to its own original films.
That said, there is a bit of a tradeoff with this news. It’s nothing major and something I think most fans expected to happen after Boyle’s departure, but due to the time taken up in finding a new director and opting to return back to the script penned by longtime Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, Bond 25 will now be releasing in theaters worldwide on February 14, 2020 rather than its original late 2019 release date.
Still… right now, I have a huge smile on my face. If anyone can manage to break the longstanding curse of a Bond actor’s final film in the role being their worst, it’s Cary Fukunaga.
