RJ Cyler Discusses What He Wants To See In A POWER RANGERS Sequel

Read Time:2 Minute, 36 Second

Hi, I’m Matt and I am a fan of the 2017 Power Rangers movie. It isn’t perfect, but it doesn’t get anywhere near the credit it deserves. The biggest stand out of the film was Billy the Blue Ranger, played by RJ Cyler.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: RJ Cyler will be a bonafide movie star. While his career is exploding, there is a chance that Power Rangers will get a sequel, now that Hasbro owns the franchise. In talking with TVInsider, Cyler discusses what he’d like the sequel to explore:

“I want to see the growth Jason has with his pa,” he shares. “In our movie they had the father-parent relationship like Mufasa and Simba… I want to see how deep in forgiveness and understanding both of them get with each other. They softened in the last movie, but I want to see how their relationship evolves. I also want to see more of the Trini character because there were a lot of good nuggets of who Trini is and how she could potentially be a part of the LGBT community.

“I want to see the development of that. Fans’ lives can change with that. Also, with Billy the possibilities of being a super hero on the autism spectrum. I recently went to Power Morphicon. I never felt so much love from such a big crowd people. Talking to each of them, whether they are on the spectrum or not, Billy related to them on some level. I want to continue to give that. I want to continue to give that person that makes them feel comfortable or find something in common. It gives them freedom of mind to chase what they want to chase.”

Jason and his father would be interesting. Jason finally has something that his father could be proud of him for, but he can’t tell him about it. Cyler is right about Trini (Becky G) too. Before the movie came out, they touted Trini being the first lesbian superhero represented in a movie – only for it to be completely glossed over in the actual flick. It happens entirely too often. They need to commit to it fully. Billy having autism was handled pretty well. It added a great layer to the character, and Cyler performed it to perfection.

If Batman Beyond ever gets a live action movie, Cyler would be my first choice for Terry McGinnis. His career is getting bigger by the day, so if they want him back for a Power Rangers sequel, they need to do it quickly. Sure, he’s contractually obligated, but judging by his comments, he’s still passionate about it too. Hasbro should move on the sequel before that enthusiasm goes away.

If the sequel deals with the evil Green Ranger or Lord Zedd, I’d be even more excited for it. They hinted at Tommy at the end of the first one, so Lord Zedd could be saved for part 3.

What do you want to see from a Power Rangers sequel? Would you like the sequel to incorporate some of the things that Cyler mentioned?
