TITANS: Brendan Thwaites Explains The Trailer’s Most Controversial Line

Read Time:1 Minute, 43 Second

When the Titans trailer dropped during San Diego Comic Con, everyone was talking about two words.

“F*ck Batman!”

The line comes from an angry, estranged Robin, played by Brendan Thwaites. While the line was not well received by a lot of people, Thwaites told EW that there is a very good reason for it.

“It’s a show that isn’t about Batman, and I think it’s important for people to know that and maybe not be disappointed that they’re not going to see Batman jumping from the ceiling and beating up a hundred guys, because it’s not Batman, it’s a story about the Titans, essentially. I feel like ‘F— Batman’ says that in two words.”

That is definitely one way to get the point across. Thwaites also reveals that it was not part of the original script, but instead was added in reshoots.

“We’d already shot that alley fight scene before, and there was no punch to it,” he explained. “There was no real exclamation mark. I think the producers wanted something that would kind of set the tone for the whole show.”

My theory is that they are showing a Dick Grayson that is broken, so we can see him earn his Nightwing moniker by the end of the season. Judging by Geoff Johns comments, I might not be far off:

“It’s definitely a Dick Grayson that’s more violent than people are used to,” added executive producer Geoff Johns. “It’s definitely a Dick Grayson that is struggling more than I think people are used to.”

We already know that Grayson will run into his replacement, the second Robin, Jason Todd. So his journey is sure to be emotional.

Batman will factor into the show, but not be seen. It’s just like Batwoman in the Arrowverse, Batman will not appear, but he definitely exists, and will impact the character.

Does this make you feel any better about the line?

Titans premieres October 12, exclusively on DC Universe, which launched last Saturday.
