Michael B. Jordan Talks About CREED II In New Interview

This has been an interesting year for Michael B. Jordan.

Back in February, he co-starred as Killmonger in Black Panther. Then it was announced that Jordan would be starring in the lead role of Rooster Teeth’s upcoming web animation mecha series gen:Lock, alongside the likes of David Tennant and Maisie Williams. Just last week, his name was thrown out as a potential actor Warner Bros were rumored to be interested in as a replacement for Henry Cavill as Superman in the DCU, although obviously that whole matter currently seems to be a fluctuating issue and should be taken with a few grains of salt.

Now his next film, Creed II, is waiting for its theatrical release just around the corner in November. Jordan spoke with the Toronto Sun in a new interview about the film and what its hype-inducing premise and connections to Rocky IV will entail for the titular protagonist.

“Drago was so huge in Rocky IV and he really (put a stamp) on the franchise at that time,” Jordan explains. “So we wanted to make a sequel that was bigger. It’s always tough to shoot a number two to anything, but we wanted to do a fresh take. We didn’t have a real villain the first time around. That was more of an origin story with Adonis fighting himself to figure out who he was. This time, I think we found the perfect vehicle to build on that and take it to the next level.”

That said, Jordan also stressed that Creed II wasn’t just about Adonis defeating Viktor Drago- the son of his father’s killer- and teased that the two have a bit in common.

“Victor’s storyline is very layered. The two guys are similar in a lot of ways… Adonis feels, naturally, a certain animosity towards Viktor and Ivan, and then there are other themes in there: the maturity of growth, the importance of family, of legacy, is what makes Creed so special. It’s not just about revenge. It’s about a lot of things… If we get that lesson across, then I think we’ve made a pretty special movie.”

Considering the fact that co-star Sylvester Stallone has been playing Rocky Balboa for forty-two years now, the site asked Jordan if he thought a similar trajectory might lie ahead for him and Adonis Creed as well. He answered:

“If I’m lucky. I want to keep making them as long as they’re good. I always want to keep my finger on the pulse. Forty two years, I mean, who knows?”
