Three months ago, Todd Stashwick revealed that he was co-writing the latest draft of the script for Suicide Squad 2. We haven’t really heard much else about the film since then, with a vast bulk of the DC-related movie news and rumors to come out throughout the summer focusing on other upcoming projects such as Todd Phillips’ Joker, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 and Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey. That said, Stashwick has just provided fans with a small update.
In a new interview with Discussing Film, Stashwick stated, “We have finished our draft and I’m really proud of it” and added that “It’s a sequel to the first film. Again, I can’t say anything else. Our intention is to tell an exciting story, deepening these characters.”
Obviously it isn’t much, but considering Stashwick’s comments feel like a natural evolution of what he originally stated when he revealed his involvement with the film three months ago (namely his desire to be proud of the script and focusing on the story), it’s nice to hear something positive about Suicide Squad 2. While it might be one of the upcoming DCU films I’m least interested in seeing right now, I desperately want to see this franchise succeed.
Plus, if Stashwick, co-writer David Bar Katz and co-writer and director Gavin O’Connor are able to churn out a big hit with the fans in Suicide Squad 2, I think there could easily be an argument to be made about it being one of the largest jumps in quality in a movie franchise from the original film to its sequel.
