EXCLUSIVE: Mark Waid Would Write A SUPERMAN Movie, Already Has A Story In Mind!
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of recording a conversation with none other than Mark Waid for the 69th Edition of The Fanboy Podcast. For longtime listeners, it should come as no surprise that this was a surreal experience for a Superman fan such as myself- especially when you consider that Birthright is my favorite modern reimagining of the Man of Steel’s mythology.
So I got to pick Mr. Waid’s brain about Superman yesterday, and he shared with me some really beautiful words about what the character has meant to him over the years and how a particular experience he had with the Last Son of Krypton saved his life and reshaped his destiny forever. I also discovered that, like many of us, it was seeing Superman on-screen that really made the strongest impression on him.
With that in mind, I asked Mark Waid if he’d ever like to bring it full circle. In an age where some comic book writers have crossed over into Hollywood, and are writing and adapting the characters they’ve written for in the books for the big screen, I wondered if he’d be interested in making that leap (over a tall building, of course) into the movies by writing a Superman film?
His answer was equal parts modest, interesting, and exciting!
“Sure. I mean, that would never happen. So it’s really easy for me to say ‘Yes.’ But sure. That’d be interesting.”
“I’d take a swing at something like that. I don’t know what my story would be. Actually, that’s not true. I know exactly what my story would be. But I can’t give it away. It’s the one Superman story I’ve got in my back pocket that- if we all live long enough- maybe someone will ask me to tell it someday.”
Beyond that, we covered a number of other great Superman topics, including how some of his work ended up in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and the neat way Warner Bros. honored that, as well as where Supes is cinematically these days, post-Justice League, and a ton more.
To hear the complete conversation with the writer of Kingdom Come, who’s had epic runs on The Flash, Captain America, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and is currently on Doctor Strange, subscribe to The Fanboy Podcast (formerly the El Fanboy Podcast) on your podcast app of choice today!
