HALLOWEEN Director David Gordon Green Talks About Collaborating With John Carpenter

Fun fact: John Carpenter didn’t just direct the original Halloween. He also personally scored the film, right down to its now iconic theme. Sure, this is a well known fact for most movie fanatics by now, but it’s still more than a little impressive. How many other directors of an iconic film can say they also personally whipped up an equally iconic soundtrack to said-film?

And as previously reported, Carpenter is returning to the franchise later this year to score David Gordon Green’s upcoming sequel to the original horror classic. It’s one of the most exciting aspects of the film, alongside its terrific trailer and the knowledge that the 2018 film will be a direct sequel to the original and ignore all previous sequels. The new director spoke with EW last week about the experience of getting to collaborate with Carpenter on his own Halloween.

Green commented:

“Oh, it’s been really fun. We’ll do a lot of weekly Skype sessions and he’ll play some stuff and send tracks. It’s cool, too. I’ll watch the movie with him, and just get notes and ideas, so that’s pretty incredible, and hilarious, as you could imagine. So, he’ll be in his studio with his keyboard and a screen [watching] the scene, and I’ll be on my computer, communicating through Skype, but watching him watch the movie, and get his ideas and commentary and musical suggestions. It’s kind of cool. It’s hard not to smile, you know. In many ways, this job is a dream come true. It’s been an incredible collaboration, with an incredible cast and group of producers, and the icing on the cake is, I get to work with one of my idols in a musical capacity, which is such an unexpected delight.”

Between Green’s Halloween and Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake, horror fans have a lot to be excited about for this fall season. We’ve had an impressive year so far with films like Annihilation, A Quiet Place and Hereditary– here’s hoping Green and Guadagnino both help close 2018 on a high note for the horror genre!
