Tessa Thompson is a hot commodity. She’s on Westworld, one of the most popular shows on TV. She is part of the She entered the MCU as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, and will re-team with Chris Hemsworth in the new Men In Black movie.
That is just the beginning though. Collider reports that Thompson will voice the lead character in Disney’s live action remake of Lady and the Tramp. What is unique about this live action remake, is that it is being made for Disney’s new streaming app. This will be the first like that. Movies like Mulan and The Lion King will still be theatrical releases.
Collider also notes that Doctor Strange star Benedict Wong has also been cast, and will play Bull, an English Bulldog.
With Thompson set as Lady, Justin Theroux will voice Tramp.
The original 1955 animated classic tells the story of a female American cocker spaniel named Lady who lives with a refined, upper-middle-class family, and a male stray mongrel known as the Tramp. When the two dogs meet, they embark on a romantic adventure (think iconic spaghetti kiss) and eventually fall in love.
This is a big property for Disney. For them to get this kind of star power and spend this kind of money on a movie that won’t even be in theaters, shows where they think the trend is going.
Between movies like this, the live action Star Wars show, and more, the Disney Streaming App will be more than worth the price for the month.
Lady and the Tramp is being directed by Charlie Bean (The LEGO Ninjago Movie) and written by Andrew Bujalski.
Thompson is such a talent. It is great to see her get all this work. But my real curiosity lays in what else Disney has planned for their app. 2 years ago, this would have 100% been a theatrical release.
What do you think? The cast seems great. Is it a mistake not to release this theatrically?
