Neill Blomkamp Wants Peter Weller To Return For His ROBOCOP Sequel
Last month, word came out that District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp would be directing a new Robocop film, with a script based on an existing, but never used potential sequel script to the original film. In the time since, fans have wondered just who Blomkamp might select to play the titular character. So much so that one fan decided to ask the director directly on Twitter!
Blomkamp answered the fan simply, “Peter Weller.”
That being said, this doesn’t appear to be confirmation from the director that Weller is actually going to be in his Robocop film (yet). Rather, Weller is who Blomkamp wants to get for the part. However considering Blomkamp was previously able to get Sigourney Weaver to agree to reprise her role as Ellen Ripley for an ultimately canned new sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens that would have retconned Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, I’d wager he can probably convince Weller to return too.
If Weller decides not to return though, I wonder who Blomkamp would ultimately select to star as his Robocop in Weller’s stead? The only actor I can think of off the top of my head who would probably be a good fit for an older Robocop is probably Josh Brolin. I’m sure there are other options out there too, but Brolin is the one that comes to my mind.
On the other hand, if Weller does return, it will be interesting to see how the actor handles the role today at the age of 71. While the obvious answer would be to have stunt men featured heavily in possible action sequences with the titular character, I actually think an elderly Robocop could work on a physical level. If he were interested in the idea, how would a filmmaker like Blomkamp decide to approach the possible internal conflict between the undying metal and robotics of Robocop and the withering flesh and bones that remain of Officer Murphy?
In the meantime, we will all have to wait to find out if Weller will return to his iconic role. Do you hope he returns or would you rather Blomkamp choose another actor for the film? Whatever your opinion may be, feel free to share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!
