Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth Step Away From STAR TREK 4

Read Time:2 Minute, 10 Second

Star Trek fans, brace yourselves. As the USS Enterprise is preparing to once again take off, Captain James Kirk and Captain George Kirk are not yet on board.

THR is reporting that both Pine and Hemsworth have walked away from the negotiation table, as have Paramount and Skydance. The studios are reportedly looking to lower the budget immensely due to the last film losing the studio money. These lower budgets also mean a good size pay cut for the cast, which is the reason Pine and Hemsworth walked away. With their rising demand in Hollywood, Pine and Hemsworth have plenty of options, if this isn’t just a negotiation tactic.

JJ Abram’s Star Trek made $385 million on a $150 million budget. Star Trek: Into Darkness made $467 million on a $185 million budget, but Star Trek: Beyond only made $345 million on a $185 million budget, which reportedly lost the studio money.

JJ Abrams directed the first two with Fast And Furious director Justin Lin helming the third one. SJ Clarkson is on board to direct the upcoming film. Quentin Tarantino is also developing another Star Trek film, but he won’t be able to focus on that until he finishes up with his current film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

In the past, the Spock to Pine’s Kirk, Zachary Quinto has said he expects himself and the rest of the reboot cast to return for another installment, but now that no longer looks like a set thing.

If the studio can’t find a reasonable compromise, that will throw much of their planning into the trash because one of the rumored ways they were hoping to reignite interest in these new Star Trek films was by having both Hemsworth and Pine onboard. The idea was to capitalize on Hemsworth’s recent swing in marquee popularity thanks to the way audiences have loved his work in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War by creating a storyline that brought back his deceased George Kirk in some way.

A film with featuring Pine and Hemworth’s James and George could have been quite special, and perhaps served as a wonderful bookend to the first of these new Star Trek films, which began with George’s sacrifice and how that impacted the life of the son he’d never get to see grow up. Could’ve been quite powerful.

Here’s hoping they work it out.

What do you think? Would you like to see all sides return to the table to finish this deal? Or are you one of those people who’d like to see the series get another reboot? Sound off!
