Patrick Stewart To Return As Captain Picard in New STAR TREK Series

Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

There have been rumblings about this for a while, but this weekend it was made official. There was a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas this weekend, and Patrick Stewart showed up as an unannounced surprise guest with Star Trek: Discovery‘s showrunner Alex Kurtzman.

Stewart announced the series on stage. You can watch the moment right here:

“And that lies at the very center of what I have to tell you now,” he said. “Jean-Luc Picard is back.”

Afterward, Stewart took to social media to elaborate:

This is big news in the Star Trek community, and rightly so. Kurtzman talked to The Hollywood Reporter about it.

“With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trek fold. For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old,” said Kurtzman

The new show will air on CBS’s streaming service, CBS All Access, which is also where the current series, Star Trek: Discovery calls home. CBS is all in on the Star Trek business, and if Discovery didn’t make people subscribe, this new show certainly will.

There is no word on who else will join Stewart on the show. I’d assume its a mix of old and new characters. These “legacy-quels” are pretty common now, so there is precedent on what to do and what not to do.

The last time we saw the character was in 2002 for Star Trek: Nemesis. If it happens in real time, we will catch up with Picard 17 or 18 years later.

It’s nice that Stewart can be “reinvigorated” about Picard and is excited to play him again. Playing him in a television show is a much larger commitment than if they did a movie. CBS will want to continue this for a long time. So it is good that Stewart is excited to boldly go back to the role.

Are you excited about this news? What do you want out of the series? Is it enough to get you to subscribe to CBS All Access?
