Jason Statham Differentiates HOBBS AND SHAW From FAST AND FURIOUS Series

Read Time:2 Minute, 42 Second

The Fast and Furious franchise is weird, ridiculous, and awesome. Jason Statham’s entered the franchise by having his character kill one of the most popular characters in the franchise – Sung Kang’s Han Seoul-Oh. He found redemption of sorts by helping Dom rescue his son in The Fate of the Furious. Now Statham will team up with Dwayne Johnson to continue their bromance in Hobbs and Shaw.

The good folks over at Collider have an interview with Statham, where he talks a little bit about Hobbs and Shaw. He addresses the campy ridiculousness of the Fast franchise:

I think Dave Leitch’s taste is a little more grounded and a little darker. If you see Atomic Blonde, and it is just superb, his taste is definitely in a world that is sort of how you described it. I think he’s looking to do something that doesn’t look exactly like a Fast movie. Although it’s the Fast characters, he’s trying to do his own thing with it and give it a real sense of credibility. I think Dave is going to get this one gritty, and real, and f*cking hardcore.”

“Gritty” is severely overused to describe the tone of a movie now days. But it seems to fit here. He talks a bit more about Leitch’s process, and that they won’t be winging it. Everything will be meticulously laid out.

“I’ve been down the gym. I’ve been fight training. I’m about to land in London and that’s where all of the choreography is all going to start coming out. I haven’t had a taste of it yet but I know he’s thorough. He knows what we’re going to do. He never wings it. He got every shot down in detail before he does it. I worked with Dave many years ago. I had a fight with him on a bus in The Mechanic. He plays a bad guy. He comes in and we’re at this bus stop and I throw him out the window and lands on the ground and gets f*cking run over.”

The part that stuck out to me the most, was that when Collider mentioned that Helen Mirren was rumored to return as Shaw’s mother in Hobbs and Shaw, Statham dropped a hint about Hobbs’ journey in the film too:

“I think Dave’s aiming for that. He wants to have the raucous laughs, the funny shit, the intense action and the great drama and the meaningful stuff. Dwayne’s got his relationship with his mother and the daughter. There’s loads of good stuff in it. I’m f*cking excited.”

We’ve seen Hobbs’ daughter in the last two Fast films. But nothing about his mother. I get the feeling that they will pair Hobbs’ mother with Mirren and hijinks will ensue their too. No one comes to mind as to who could play Hobbs’ mother right now, especially someone who could hold their own against Mirren.

For the record, I did not coordinate it so every pull quote ended with a sentence of Statham cursing. That is just the way it happened. I promise.

Hobbs and Shaw hits theaters July 26, 2019.
