EPISODE IX Crew Using Old Cell Phones To Avoid Leaks

Read Time:1 Minute, 51 Second

Star Wars: Episode IX is gearing up to begin filming. When you combine a secretive director like J.J. Abrams with a secretive franchise like Star Wars, especially after you’ve done this once before already, you take any measure possible to avoid leaks.

Victoria Mahoney serves as the second unit director on Episode IX. She tweeted out this piece of nostalgia being used by the crew of Episode IX. (The tweet was literally deleted a few seconds ago, at the time of writing this. Luckily I have a screenshot!)

It seems they are all using old cellphones, incapable of taking and sending videos and pictures. No social media apps either. My first thought was this:

“What a piece of junk!”

“She’ll make .5 past lightspeed. She may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts, kid. I’ve made a lot of special modifications myself.”

I am surprised they can even find service for them. But as you can see in the picture, it is on and has some sort of use to them.

It is curious that the tweet was deleted. It was up for almost 24 hours. The irony here is delicious. Mahoney tweeted out a picture on the set about how pictures can’t be tweeted on set to avoid leaks. Then the tweet was deleted because it was considered spoilery apparently.

Abrams has always taken precautions in order to prevent leaks. But this is unprecedented as far as I am aware. Most people of a certain age had a phone similar to the one in the picture. Out of those people, I’d say most of them even still have one laying in a junk drawer somewhere right now too.

Star Wars: Episode IX is gearing up to start filming soon. No one knows what Abrams has in store for us, but it could involve Billy Dee Williams returning as Lando Calrissian. By the looks of it, it seems that Abrams will make it as hard as possible for people to find out until he wants us to know.

Do you appreciate the lengths Lucasfilm is going to prevent leaks? Or do you think its overkill?

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters December 20, 2019.
