Looks Like An Abrams Favorite Is Returning For STAR WARS: EPISODE IX
When it came time to relaunch the Star Wars movie franchise, J.J. Abrams got by with a little help from his friends. The lifelong fanboy created neat opportunities for friends and past collaborators to appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which undoubtedly made the experience that much more special for him. Two notable Abrams inclusions were Simon Pegg, who played Unkar Plutt, and Greg Grunberg, who played Resistance pilot Temmin “Snap” Wexley.
While it’s unknown if Plutt will pop up again in Star Wars: Episode IX, it looks like we may be seeing more of Grunberg’s Wexley.
In a recent interview, Grunberg playfully teased that he was growing out his facial hair to reprise the role. While chatting with Yahoo! News, he was asked if Abrams had invited him back for Star Wars: Episode IX, and the actor joked:
You know what — we’d better [return] or else my wife is going to kill me for growing a beard. I can’t officially say anything, but this is getting itchy, and I’m getting itchy to go over there and do it.”
Grunberg’s Wexley had a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and his presence in The Force Awakens was also quite brief. Maybe this time, he’ll actually get something substantial to do in Star Wars: Episode IX? We shall see.
J.J. Abrams will start filming the next film in the series from a galaxy far, far away later this year. Star Wars: Episode IX will presumably finish off the Skywalker Saga that began in 1977 when it arrives in theaters in December of next year. Once that’s done, the future of the series is wide open as Lucasfilm has lined up several gifted filmmakers to expand on the mythology and push us into a new era, while also including standalone films that focus on classic characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett.
