THE WALKING DEAD’s Greg Nictorero Is Bringing CREEPSHOW To Shudder!

Longtime followers of mine know that if there’s anything I love nearly as much as Superman and superheroes in general…it’s horror. From scary movies, to scary TV shows, my favorite way to unwind at the end of a long week is to turn off the lights, get on the couch with my wife, and watch something that scares the bejeezus out of us. That’s why I’m so excited about the prospect of a Creepshow horror anthology series!

That, and the fact that anthology shows are quickly becoming my favorite kinds of shows because of the minimal investments of time they require. I don’t have a lot of free time these days, so shows like Black Mirror and Electric Dreams are absolutely perfect- with their standalone episodes. Even series like American Horror Story and Fargo are ideal, because each season is its own thing.

But okay, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s talk Creepshow.

There were two Creepshow movies in the 80s, which I absolutely loved (and so did RTF contributor Robb Moreira, to the point where we were just talking about them recently). They were novel in their approach because, similar to the film adaptation of The Twilight Zone, they each told a handful of self-contained horror stories. To this day, I’m still haunted by The Hitchhiker, from Creepshow 2, and I hate driving late at night on dark, rainy roads.

The films are great little spooky gems, with a nice mix of dark humor thrown in for good measure, and they come in a format that’s perfect for television. The format tends to find a small boy reading his latest Creepshow comic book, and then the events vividly coming to life in his imagination. We revisit the boy in between stories, as he has his own arc. One could easily see how this would make for a good structure for an anthology TV series, and it sounds like Greg Nicotero sees it, too.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that executive producer of The Walking Dead is adapting Creepshow for the Shudder streaming service. Each episode will have its own director and have its own story to tell when it arrives in 2019.

Now I just have to get Shudder…
