Henry Cavill Says He’d Like A Chance To Play ‘A Real Beacon of Hope,’ And Face Brainiac

Central to the debates between those who embraced Zack Snyder’s vision for Superman and those who felt he missed the mark with the character is whether or not he ever allowed for the Man of Steel to actually inspire people. One of the bedrock tenets of the character has always been his ability to help others, both physically and emotionally, and while there were many allusions to the idea of Hope in 2013’s Man of Steel, some felt this new take on Kal-El never quite got the chance to display that classic trait.

There are also different schools of thought within the fandom about whether or not it’s true that he never became a true beacon of hope. Some have always argued that he was that all along, inspiring the people of earth through his valiant actions at the end of Man of Steel, and again in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice by helping others even as so many seemed to resent him for doing so. Meanwhile, there are others who’ve argued that the “classic, inspirational Superman” was set to be the payoff for his character arc that was supposed to play out through Justice League– a payoff we’d never get to see because the studio hijacked the film from Zack Snyder.

Regardless of whether you think he was a symbol of hope, or was going to become that classic symbol for good, there seems to be one person who thinks he hasn’t been that yet: Henry Cavill.

The actor has dropped hints in the past- some subtle and some not– that he didn’t exactly love the version of the character he’s portrayed thus far, like when he said this to The Rake last fall:

“I feel like now the right mistakes have been made and they haven’t been pandered [to], and we can start telling the stories in the way they need to be told. It is even better to come back from a mistake or stylistic error into the correct vein because it will make it seem that much stronger. Wonder Woman was the first step in the right direction.“

And now some new comments from the Superman actor reveal where he stands and where he hopes to one day go, if given the chance to keep playing the Last Son of Krypton.

In a chat with Fandom, Cavill opened up about the version of Superman he’d like to play one day. When asked if he’d like a chance to play an “Evil Superman” like the one Christopher Reeve played in Superman III, Cavill said:

“I would be very keen for the opportunity to play a classic comic Supes before playing evil. In the comic books, there’s a lot of really, really good stories about being the classic hero — a real beacon of hope and a shining light for everyone to aspire towards — and it would be a lot of fun to play that version of Supes.”

As you can see, Henry Cavill doesn’t seem to think he’s had a chance to be that beacon of hope or that shining late yet.

And as for who he’d like to face off against if he gets the opportunity, Cavill points at a classic Superman villain:

“I think a great villain would be Brainiac. I think that would be a good villain to play against. Brainiac’s a big threat. There’s a lot of fun. There’s a lot of storylines to him.”

These kinds of comments are sure to come at a quick clip while he’s out doing press for Mission: Impossible- Fallout. After all, when you’re the actor playing Superman, you’re going to be inundated with questions about the beloved character. But it also seems to work in his favor as he negotiates a new deal with WB/DC, as our Editor-In-Chief Mario-Francisco Robles pointed out earlier today.

Comments like these are surely going to help him convince the studio to back up the Brinks Truck onto his driveway.
