Cate Shortland Will Direct BLACK WIDOW For Marvel
Natasha Romanoff AKA The Black Widow, is arguably the biggest character in the MCU who doesn’t have her own movie. That is changing now, with THR reporting that Cate Shortland officially tapped to direct the standalone film.
The search for a director was very extensive. Marvel met with over 70 potential candidates before deciding on Shortland. Scarlett Johansson, who has portrayed the character since 2010, pushed for Shortland, whom she is a fan of.
According to THR, the finalists boiled down like this:
The hunt narrowed in June with Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) being the finalists alongside Shortland. Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) were also in the next-to-final mix.
The movie is rumored to take place before 2012’s Avengers movie. No word on how far back, and if digital de-aging would be used for the process.
While Black Widow is an important character in the MCU, the window for her own movie seems to have closed to me. I love that Marvel will make more female-centric movies, but I’d rather see Shuri in her own movie. Or Riri Williams as the new Iron Man (Heart), or Valkyrie team up with The Wasp or something like that. But Marvel apparently disagrees, because the Black Widow movie is happening.
I will go see it, as I do all MCU movies. But Marvel may have an uphill battle with this one, especially after the tone deaf comments Johansson made with regards to playing a transgender man.
I’d be curious to see if Jeremy Renner was involved in the movie as well. Hawkeye and Widow have a very close and intertwined relationship. I would actually be quite surprised if he didn’t show up, even if it was just bookend cameos or something. Time will tell.
Have you seen any of Shortland’s work? Do you think she is a good fit for a Black Widow movie?
