Here Is The First Official Look at SHAZAM!
Thanks to Entertainment Weekly the first official photo from WB/DC’s upcoming live action Shazam! is finally here, and you can see it below!
The pic features Zachary Levi in his full Shazam costume chugging down some generic cola with It’s Jack Dylan Grazer, who pays Freddy Freeman, best friend of Shazam!’s alter ego Billy Batson (played by Andi Mack’s Asher Angel).
Here’s what the film’s director, David Sandberg, had to say about the costume:
“I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman. It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.”
Sandberg has discussed the costume before, having tweaked it all the way through filming for the comfort of Levi.
And here’s EW’s plot synopsis:
Billy is assigned to a new foster home where he befriends comic book superfan Freddy. One day, Billy’s subway ride is interrupted by a mysterious Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) whose been searching for ages to find the right successor to inherit his powers. He reveals the teen’s been selected to gain an assortment of abilities, and all it takes is for Billy to say “SHAZAM!”
It was recently announced that Djimon Hounsou would play the Wizard, a role thought to have been taken by Ron Cephas Jones who stars in This Is Us. It is even announced that Cephas Jones had the role in the official press release from Warner Bros when filming started, which you can read below.
The vibe of this movie has been pretty consistent in the marketing, and it seems like we will get a Guardians of the Galaxy type of comedic tone for the movie. Maybe something like Thor: Ragnarok would be an apt comparison as well.
With DC bringing this movie to San Diego Comic Con next week, this could be the first of a barrage of new material we get for Shazam!
Shazam! is scheduled to hit theaters April 5, 2019.
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard.Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
“Shazam!” also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”). Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez,
with Ron Cephas Jones (“This is Us”) as the Wizard.
