INCREDIBLES 2 Has Broken Another Box Office Record
With any luck, fans won’t have to wait over a decade for the next Incredibles sequel. Scott Mendelson of Forbes reports that Brad Bird’s Incredibles 2 has broken yet another record at the box office. Aside from now being the highest-grossing animated feature of all-time in North America, Mendelson notes that Incredibles 2 is now also the biggest-grossing feature film not rated PG-13 in North American box office history. In other words, every film rated G, PG, R, NC-17 or X… so long as you don’t make the adjustment for inflation.
The PG-13 rating was created in the mid-80’s after PG-rated films such as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom received audience backlash for being too dark or scary in their content compared to normal PG-rated blockbusters, yet weren’t exactly qualifiers for the R-rating either. Over the past twenty years or so, the PG-13 rating has evolved to act as something of a “catch all” rating, resulting in it being the go-to rating for a vast majority of blockbusters for well over a decade now. Mendelson notes, “But for most movies, a PG for animation is the equivalent of an old-school G while the PG-13 can be anything from a glorified PG (Goosebumps) to an “edited just so” R-rated action (Angels and Demons) or horror movie (Prom Night).”
Again though, Incredibles 2 only holds this record under the context that there has been no adjustment for inflation.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is still tops in terms of tickets sold,” Mendelson says. “However, presuming a $565 million+ domestic cume, it’s certainly going to end up palling around with Snow White, The Lion King, Fantasia, DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 2 and Sleeping Beauty among inflation-adjusted animated mega-hits, specifically those which didn’t necessarily get a deluge of reissues over the decades.“
At the end of the day though, what matters isn’t really the box office record or whether or not said-record factors in inflation. Instead, what matters is that Brad Bird made a really special sequel to an already beloved film that stands out among the crowd.
