Netflix Is Making An ULTRAMAN Series

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Ultraman is about to get a new level of exposure for audiences in the Western side of the world. For over fifty years now, the Ultra Series has been one of the most popular franchises in Japan, double-dipping in both the daikaiju genre (“Huge Monsters” such as Godzilla or Gamera) and the kyodai hiro genre (“Giant Heroes”). The franchise has had some exposure in the United States before, but never close to the same level of popularity as seen in the character’s homeland of Japan.

However that may change, come Spring 2019. Netflix has confirmed that they will be releasing a brand new Ultraman anime, described as “an action drama” and based around one of the manga series of the franchise. The new anime series will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki. While other versions of the series have previously been produced in both live-action and animation formats, this particular incarnation of Ultraman will reportedly be animated via 3D CGI.

While news of the Ultraman manga receiving an anime adaptation first came out in November 2017, confirmation that Netflix would be premiering the show was revealed more recently via the twelfth compiled manga volume of Ultraman written by Eiichi Shimizu and drawn by Tomohiro Shimoguchi.

For my part, I can’t give much of an opinion on the matter. While I have personally lived in Japan as both a child and now as an adult, Ultraman was one of those shows that I never bothered to check out. I will say though that I see Ultraman all over the place here in Okinawa. I’m quite curious to see how much of a splash this new Netflix series will have for audiences in America and Europe.
