THE CROWN’s Vanessa Kirby Will Join The Cast of HOBBS AND SHAW
The Fast and Furious franchise received a shot in the arm when Dwayne Johnson joined the series in Fast Five. He’s been in every movie since, and there were always talks of a standalone spinoff with his character. But then when The Fate of The Furious happened, and the chemistry between Johnson and Jason Statham was the highlight of the movie, the idea of solo shifted to a buddy action flick called Hobbs and Shaw.
But Johnson and Statham were the only ones confirmed to appear in Hobbs and Shaw, as their respective characters. Now, the cast is filling out a bit more.
Vanessa Kirby, who played Princess Margaret on Netflix’s The Crown is in final negotiations to join the spinoff, reports Variety. Who Kirby is playing is the most interesting part, if you are familiar with the franchise.
Kirby will play an MI-5 agent and Shaw’s sister.
For those that don’t know, Statham’s Deckard Shaw entered the picture to get revenge on Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family for the defeat of Deckard’s brother Owen Shaw. Then in The Fate of The Furious, both Shaw brothers appeared, as did their mother Magdalene Shaw, played by the legendary Dame Helen Mirren.
So Hobbs and Shaw will expand the Shaw family in an interesting way. Every Shaw we have met so far has been on the other side of the law. To see a Shaw as an MI-5 agent will be an interesting layer to add to the relationship of lawman Hobbs and criminal Shaw.
I was already in the bag for this ridiculous two hour testosterone ride, but the addition of Kirby to Hobbs and Shaw might add a layer of nuance that the franchise has rarely seen.
Franchise staple Chris Morgan is writing the movie, and will be helmed by Deadpool 2 director David Leitch.
The existence of this spinoff has caused some tensions between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel. Tyrese Gibson has been vocal against it too. It is unclear how this will effect who appears in the inevitable Fast and Furious 9. Only time will tell.
Hobbs and Shaw will hit theaters July 26, 2019.
