SPIDER-VERSE: Sony Preps For A Very Spidey Comic Con

Things are so weird these days in the world of Spider-Man. On the one hand, he’s made a rapid comeback in theaters with the youthful incarnation played by Tom Holland in the MCU over the past three years due to the agreement Sony made with Marvel Studios. Not to mention both of the trailers for the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated film look utterly breathtaking.

And then there’s Sony trying to pull some bizarre shenanigans with movies like Venom, Silver & Black or the recently announced Morbius film starring Jared Leto. What seems to be going on is Sony trying to piggyback off of Marvel Studio’s success in rejuvenating Spidey by setting up their own “Spider-Verse” live action cinematic universe that may or may not have Peter Parker in it at all. And he may or may not be played by Tom Holland. It’s confusing, it’s shady and it just brings back bad memories of when Sony’s eyes got bigger than their stomachs while making The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a few years back.

Regardless of what the studio’s play is, the point is clear: They intend to move forward with their Spider-Man related properties for the foreseeable future. So much so that Deadline is reporting that Sony will host a panel at Hall H in the upcoming San Diego Comic Con for their upcoming Spider-based films (Into The Spider-Verse and Venom).

Deadline says:

“Sony’s Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be swinging into Hall H in a few weeks with a session on Friday, July 20 at 6:15PM.

Extensive footage for both movies was recently shown at CinemaCon back in April…

Even though Marvel Studios’ film side is skipping Hall H this year, it would come as no surprise should Spider-Man star Tom Holland make a surprise appearance in San Diego during the Sony panel. Holland recently served as an Avengers: Infinity War panelist at the ACE Comic-Con in Seattle last weekend which was timed to his title reveal on Instagram for the next Marvel/Sony sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home due out a year from now on July 5, 2019.“

If nothing else, it will be interesting to see what Sony has to say about the future of their Spider-Man projects at this upcoming panel.
