JUMANJI Sequel Gets Official Release Date And ANGRY BIRDS 2 Moves Up
Weeks after he announced that a sequel to last year’s Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle was “officially underway,” lead actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has once again taken to Instagram to announce the official release date of the upcoming film: December 13th, 2019.
“Officially planting our JUMANJI flag. On DECEMBER 13th, 2019 – the game is not over. I hold JUMANJI very close to my heart and I’m beyond grateful you made our movie into the global juggernaut ($1BILLION+) it became. Can’t wait for you to see what our new adventure & new characters have in store as Christmas comes early. And once again, I get to slap @kevinhart4real’s lip’s into next week. The world is happy.
#FearTheDrums #TheGameIsNotOver #JUMANJI DECEMBER 13th, 2019“
This release date matches Sony’s earlier comments this Spring that the film would hit theaters during December 2019.
Deadline points out some interesting details about the Jumanji sequel’s new release date:
“The Dwayne Johnson-starring comedy remake will drop now on Dec. 13, 2019. That puts Jumanji into the weekend after the highly anticipated family animated offering Frozen 2 and the weekend before another big movie: Star Wars: Episode IX.“
Honestly I’m not sure if that date is a good or bad call. On the one hand, obviously it’s better to release Jumanji on any day where a Frozen sequel or a new Star Wars film isn’t also just hitting theaters too. On the other hand, maybe it would be wiser for Sony to position the film a week or two after Star Wars? It’s hard to tell how well that release date will play out for Sony, I think.
On a semi-related note, Deadline also adds that another upcoming Sony sequel, Angry Birds 2, has been bumped up to September 6th, 2019 from its original release date later in that month. Coincidentally, September 6th will also be the release date of another highly anticipated sequel- Andy Muschietti’s It: Chapter Two.
