Men In Black 4 is happening at Sony with F. Gary Gray directing Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Liam Neeson. Now the cast is filling out even more, with Kumail Nanjiani joining the cast.
ThatHashtagShow has The Big Scoop – Nanjiani has signed on to play “Pawny, a funny, wise-cracking, sex-driven alien from a civilization that exists on a Chessboard.” That sounds great, especially if he gets carried around in Hemsworth’s pocket or something.
Hemsworth plays Agent H, a goofy James Bond type characters, while Thompson plays Molly, a woman who knows aliens exists and is determined to join the M.I.B. Neeson will play the leader of the U.K. branch of the Men in Black.
Nanjiani will fit in perfectly with that cast, and I am so excited to hear the banter created from Nanjiani’s genius.
My second favorite movie of 2017 was The Big Sick. That charming little movie was absolutely incredible, and has cemented me as a Kumail Nanjiani for life. To hear that he is a joining a franchise I enjoy, with an already stellar cast is great news. The only thing that would have made it better is if he could play a human character – we need more people who look like Nanjiani represented on the big screen. It doesn’t have the same effect when masked in makeup and CGI. Still, an alien living on a chess board that has the essence of Nanjiani is very intriguing.
It makes me wonder how big of a role Pawny will play. Is he like Frank or Jack Jeebs from the original one – just there for comedic purposes? Hemsworth, Neeson and Thompson are all great at comedy. They can all lift the comedy weight equally. So to bring in a heavy hitter like Nanjiani hopefully means that Pawny will receive some heart, depth, and purpose during the film, so when the spinoff Netflix series happens, he’s already somewhat fleshed out. Just kidding, but I seriously hope he is used for more than just “comic relief”.
To me, Men In Black 4 is shaping up to be quite the spectacle. If for no other reason, I am excited because it is better than what we almost had. Men In Black 4 was almost a crossover with 21 Jump Street starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Compared to that, this is already a home run.
What do you think of this casting news? Does it move the scales on your thoughts on MIB 4 at all?
