RUMOR: Cate Shortland And Other Female Directors Eyed For BLACK WIDOW Solo Film
Having culled from a field of 49 potential directors, Deadline is reporting that the folks at Marvel Studios appear to have a “Top Three” list of candidates for the Black Widow solo movie gig. The site reports that filmmakers Cate Shortland (Lore and Berlin Syndrome), Amma Asante (Belle) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) are all likely picks for the film. According to Deadline, all three directors have already met with Kevin Feige and Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson.
Any of these three women would make for a superb choice to helm the Black Widow film. Putting aside from the fact that Feige is continuing the wonderful trend of selecting filmmakers of different ethnicities and gender, all three of these directors have made critically acclaimed films and could each offer a unique cinematic spin to Natasha Romanova. This is in keeping with picks like Taika Waititi and Ryan Coogler each recently helming Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther.
All things considered, I’m personally rooting for Shortland to land the gig. I always love seeing a horror filmmaker transition over to the superhero genre, such as Sam Raimi with his Spider-Man trilogy or James Wan with his upcoming Aquaman film. Plus, while Black Widow might not have any superpowers of her own, her world and backstory is considerably darker and more violent than a vast number of her contemporaries in the MCU. Having a filmmaker that’s able to capture that brutal environment in an appropriately volatile way would likely benefit the film.
What do you think though? Are you all excited to finally see Black Widow star in her own solo film? Which director of the three names are you hoping lands the gig? Would you rather someone else land the job? Be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments section down below!
