WONDER WOMAN 2 Director Patty Jenkins Reveals Returning Character (And Confirms Film’s Title?!)

Wonder Woman 2 is currently filming, as we saw some unofficial set pictures the other day. Patty Jenkins returned to direct the sequel, and through her social media, we found out she is not the only one returning.

Yep, that is Chris Pine on the set of Wonder Woman 2. If you remember the end of the first movie – during World War I, Steve Trevor died flying a plane ready to explode away from civilization. So how can he be in the sequel, which takes place in 1984, some 70 years after World War I?

Well, the obvious answer is that it is a premonition/dream/vision type thing. That is a common movie trope that is used and could be quite effective here.

Pine could also be playing a descendant of the original Steve Trevor – a great nephew or something. It would be a way to keep Pine in the franchise in the future.

My favorite theory however, comes from Marc Bernardin who was spitballing on an episode of Fatman on Batman once. He postulated that Pine could be playing a form of Martian Manhunter, who took the form of someone of importance from Diana’s past to gain her trust. David Harewood portrays the Martian Manhunter on The CW’s Supergirl. But a movie version could still very much be in the cards, and in my opinion, this would have the most story potential, and Pine’s inclusion would not feel forced whatsoever.

Not to be outdone, Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot shared one more very 80’s picture from the set:

The 80’s were a fascinating time for fashion and aesthetics, and Jenkins looks to be doing a good job in capturing that.

It should also be noted that both Jenkins and Gadot are referring to the film as “Wonder Woman 1984” and using the hashtag “#WW84.” A topic that’s come up on the last two episodes of The Revengers Podcast is whether that name would stick, since it opens up some fascinating storytelling possibilities while also positioning this film as a uniquely intriguing superhero sequel. With the two of them calling it this, could this be confirmation that the film is called Wonder Woman 1984?

It is nice that we are getting some official news about the much anticipated sequel this early into filming, as well as some tantalizing teases of what may be to come.
