RUMOR: Jordan Peele Wants To Make A GARGOYLES Movie
Right now, across certain corners of the planet, I assure you that there are some number of adults born in the late 80’s and early 90’s that are rightfully screaming in a fervor of excitement and hype. I know I am- and by God is it difficult to write this article in a professional manner and not just write three hundred words’ worth of literary screaming.
“Why?” you ask. Because there’s a rumor that Get Out director Jordan Peele has approached Disney about making a Gargoyles movie. Now let’s all join together for those fan-screams!
But there is a catch, unfortunately. According to Richard Rushfield of The Ankler, who broke the story, Disney is currently in a “wait and see” mode. Rushfield elaborates:
“How do you turn down Jordan Peele? Well, you can’t. Who wants to be responsible for that decision? So in the absence of a good reason to say no, but prevented by their Big IP box from saying yes, Disney is slow walking the decision. It’s hoping, it seems, that they’ll run out the clock, he’ll sign other deals elsewhere, and the project will just fade away.”
While I absolutely want to see more original film ideas from Peele, I can’t deny that there’s a loud child’s voice ringing from deep inside my past that desperately wants to see Peele’s take on the Gargoyles franchise. Call it blind nostalgia if you must, but the original 90’s cartoon show was quite a fun ride, being Disney’s fantastical answer to the massive success of Batman: The Animated Series.
Plus, while I know there’s a chunk of fans out there that aren’t keen on the idea of politics getting into their IPs, I think Gargoyles is a franchise that the world could really use these days. From its main protagonist Goliath being voiced by the delightfully awesome Keith David to the badass half-African American, half-Native American female lead Elisa Masa, Gargoyles was a show that was at least a little bit ahead of the curve in terms of representation. Hell, there was even a really great episode early on in the show about the importance of gun control and safety that feels more relevant than ever these days! To me, this is a franchise that Peele would fit in perfectly with.
But what do you think? Be sure to share your thoughts with us down in the comments section below!
