Ever since he was cast in Wonder Woman 2, folks have been wondering who Pedro Pascal would be playing in the film. Some were quick to suggest, based on his looks, that he might be Vandal Savage; Our own Mike Marchant once posited Sebastian Ballesteros; And yet here we are, with the production now in full swing, without a clue as to who Pascal is playing.
Then something potentially interesting happened this afternoon: Pascal posted a picture on his Instagram that feels an awful lot like a hint about the character he’s playing in the movie, which is actively filming.
Here’s the post, and the picture on its own (in case your browser doesn’t display the embedded Instagram post):
That tiger-print shirt is what jumped out at me. After all, DC Comics has several feline-based villains, and the central villain for Wonder Woman 2 will be Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).
If we are to look at this in a literal sense, then that would indicate he may be playing some new version of Bronze Tiger– a DC villain primarily known for antagonizing the Suicide Squad and Batman in the comics. If we’re looking at it more like he’s dropping a hint that he’s playing some sort of cat-man, then that once again circles us around to Ballesteros. As Mike pointed out in his initial suggestion about Pascal’s role, Ballesteros is an Argentinian businessman with ties to Barbara Minerva, aka Cheetah, and the Chilean actor could easily pull that off.
Circling back to the Bronze Tiger idea, that could potentially get Patty Jenkins and co. into some hot water in the current cultural climate, considering he’s traditionally depicted as an African-American named Ben Turner. Then again, considering Pascal is Chilean, you couldn’t exactly accuse them of whitewashing, could you?
The character has had many looks over the years, sometimes appearing as a clearly-visible man with a suit on, and sometimes appearing as a full-fledged man-cat. Here are a few ways Bronze Tiger has been depicted:
All in all, I’m leaning towards it being Ballesteros. But this is all just spit-balling, mind you. That Instagram post (and his choice of shirt for it) could be purely coincidental, or it could be very deliberate. These thoughts you’ve just read are simply what ran through my mind the second I saw the photo, and I thought I’d share it with you.
I’ve reached out to Pascal for a comment on this theory, and I’ll be sure to let you know if he confirms or denies it.
What do you think? Is he dropping a hint? Is it just a cool shirt? If you think he is dropping a hint, who do you think he’s playing in Wonder Woman 2? Let me know!
