RUMOR: Val Kilmer Back In The Cockpit For TOP GUN: MAVERICK?

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

For the record, I want it to be known that I had to resist using the meme-tastic still of Kilmer’s thumbs up moment from Batman Forever for this article. Anyway, onto the matter at hand: A Top Gun sequel is finally happening and according to The Wrap, Val Kilmer has been cast to reprise his role as aviator Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, opposite of returning lead Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The new film is titled Top Gun: Maverick and will be directed by Joseph Kosinski of Tron: Legacy and Oblivion fame.

While it is worth keeping in mind that Kilmer’s presence in the film has yet to be officially confirmed by Paramount Studios, The Wrap adds that Kilmer “has been spotted around the San Diego hotel the studio has been using since production began last week.” So while this isn’t absolutely definite yet, it seems more than likely that Kilmer has indeed joined as part of the film’s cast.

However it remains to be seen what Iceman’s role in Top Gun: Maverick will be. We do know that Maverick will mentor a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Iceman also acts as an instructor for the new generation. But again, that remains to be seen. For all we know, Kilmer could merely be stepping in for a small cameo appearance in the film.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Are you excited at the prospects of Kilmer returning to one of his most iconic roles for Top Gun: Maverick? Are you itching to go listen to Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” for old times’ sake? Or do you think that this film shouldn’t be made? Whatever your thoughts on the matter may be, please share them with us in the comment section down below!
