One of the these three actors may be making their way to Willy Wonka’s world of imagination.
According to Collider, Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling and Ezra Miller are on Warner Bros.’ short list to play the famous candy maker in the upcoming prequel film based on the character from Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Paddington film series director Paul King will helm the film.
Glover’s name has been on the rise in Hollywood in recent years thanks to his television work on Community and Atlanta, which he himself created, and his work on major franchise flicks such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, Solo: A Star Wars Story and the upcoming live-action remake of The Lion King. Collider said that Glover is actively pursuing the role of Wonka.
For Miller, his involvement isn’t that much of a surprise. Miller currently has a pretty good relationship with WB and is an active part in two of the studio’s biggest franchises, Fantastic Beasts and the DC film universe. The only drawback would be potentially overexposing Miller in yet another franchise.
This brings us to Gosling, who also has a solid working relationship with WB. Gosling has starred in many high profile films for the studio, such as Blade Runner 2049, Crazy, Stupid Love and The Nice Guys. Gosling’s next film, First Man, is looking like a strong awards season contender and WB may try to ride off that high by securing Gosling as Wonka.
All three actors are solid choices and will bring their own spin to the Wonka character. Gene Wilder’s witty and sarcastic take famously brought the character to life in the 1971 classic, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, while Johnny Depp played a more child-like version of the character in Tim Burton’s 2005 adaptation of the book.
While the idea of a Willy Wonka prequel wasn’t a hot one for a lot of people, one of these three actors signing on may be enough to swing public perception of the project.
