Disney Execs Open Up About ‘Trying To Understand’ Why SOLO Flew So Low On Its Opening Weekend
I am not one who takes box office numbers into consideration when wanting to see a movie. Nor do I measure my enjoyment of the film by that either. But the companies who put the movies out do, because that is how they stay in business.
Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the numbers. Hollis wasn’t sure if a crowded slate – with movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 being out so close to Solo had an impact.
“There’s a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies. Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period?”
Solo has some room to grow now, with the next huge “blockbuster” movie (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) not being released until the end of June. Hollis wants to watch the next few weeks carefully.
“Let’s measure how we feel about this until more time passes.”
The bottom line is that Lucasfilm and Disney are paying attention to the numbers. How much this impacts the future of the franchise remains to be seen, however.
“We have a lot of work to do in trying to understand this,” says Hollis. “We are all over it and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did in various markets. We have a year and a half before Episode IX comes out.”
Outside of Episode IX, there is a Boba Fett movie coming from James Mangold. There is almost certainly an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie in development too. Not to mention Rian Johnson has his standalone trilogy he is working on and the Game of Thrones creators are working on a series of films as well.
The point is, there is a lot of Star Wars on the way. What Solo will do for the future of the franchise will be interesting to watch.
Solo is a fun movie. Its the perfect light fun summer entertainment flick. I like that not every adventure has to be serious, dire, and important. Solo has been getting its fair share of positive reactions too. The reactions wouldn’t seem as one sided if only people who actually watched the film chimed in. I have no problem with people not liking the movie, as long as they’ve seen it. It is the people who trash it before even giving it a chance that irks me.
If you want to check it out for yourself, Solo: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now.
