Jake Gyllenhaal in Talks to Play Mysterio in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING 2

Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

This bit of news will surely get the Spidey-Senses tingling.

According to THR, Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play Mysterio in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. Tom Holland is set to return as the titular hero, while Jon Watts is set to direct the flick.

Gyllenhaal is no stranger to the Spider-Man franchise. He was once considered to replace Tobey Maguire  in Spider-Man 2 after Maquire hurt his back while filming Seabiscuit. However, it wasn’t meant to be since Maquire was healthy enough to reprise the role.

Mysterio’s entrance into the franchise is an exciting one. Fans have longed for the master of illusion to get a big screen treatment after he was rumored to be a potential villain during Sam Raimi’s time with the franchise in the 2000’s.

This also potentially sets up the possibility of a big screen version of the Sinister Six. As fans remember, Sony attempted to set-up the Sinister Six in the Amazing Spider-Man films, but the studio scraped those plans. Marvel has already started planting the seeds for the villain super group in Spider-Man Homecoming with the introduction of Michael Keaton’s Vulture, who Variety reports will also be in the film.

Gyllenhaal is a great actor and he will certainly bring his A-game with Mysterio.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is set for July 5, 2019.

What do you guys think of Gyllenhaal as Mysterio?
