New MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE- FALLOUT Trailer Ratchets Up The Tension, Reveals Nature of Henry Cavill’s Role!

Mission: Impossible- Fallout, the sixth film in the long-running spy series that began in 1996, is set to arrive on Aquaman‘s old release date of July 27. If for some reason you’ve been sleeping on this movie, it’s time to stop what you’re doing and check out the latest trailer because it’s pretty great.

Here’s your latest look at Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible- Fallout:

The best intentions often come back to haunt you. “MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE– FALLOUT” finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise – “Top Gun,” “American Made,” “The Mummy”) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin – “Saturday Night Live,” “The Boss Baby,” “Beetlejuice,” Simon Pegg – “Star Trek,” “Ready Player One,” Ving Rhames – “Pulp Fiction,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson – “The Greatest Showman,” ”The Girl on the Train,” Michelle Monaghan – “The Bourne Supremacy,” “The Heartbreak Kid”) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill (“Justice League,” “Man of Steel”), Angela Bassett (“Black Panther,” “American Horror Story”), and Vanessa Kirby (“Me Before You,” “The Crown”) also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie (“Jack Reacher”) returning to the helm.

The film looks to be hard-hitting, tense, and almost like a culmination of all that’s come before it. The story seems to hinge on old decisions made by Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), and how they’re coming back to haunt him in a very personal way. The stakes seem high for Hunt, and that makes for great drama while also adding emotional complexity to the action- which seems to be getting served up in abundance in this high-octane blockbuster.

It should also be noted that this trailer gives us some clarity into the nature of Henry Cavill’s role in Mission: Impossible- Fallout. In the previous trailer, he seemed like he could go either way. He came off as someone who’s on Hunt’s trail, but could also be sympathetic to our hero. Not this time. The trailer makes it clear that he’s a human wrecking ball- or a hammer, as Angela Bassett’s character puts it- and that Hunt is going to have a hard time dealing with him throughout the film.

What do you think of the latest trailer for Fallout? And, if you didn’t before, now do you see why our editor-in-chief is so adamant that director Christopher McQuarrie would be perfect for a Superman Sequel with Henry Cavill?
