Update

The publication that reported on this story as an exclusive with direct quotes, Premiere France, has now retracted their story. They apparently misquoted Kathleen Kennedy, and have thus issued this statement about their goof-up:

Following the publication of our article, Lucasfilm informs us that there would have been a misunderstanding between our journalist and Kathleen Kennedy. “We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but it’s not relevant, it would be fun to tell the story of Han and Chewie …”

Oh well. That’s a shame. Sorry, Lando fans!

I will see your Kenobi rumors and raise them a Lando one. We might be getting a lot more of Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian in the near future.

Reaction to Solo: A Star Wars Story has been varied, but the one constant is praise for Glover’s portrayal of Lando. Kathleen Kennedy, the head of Lucasfilm, hears that, and told Premiere France that his story will be the next standalone we see.

“We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian,” Kennedy said. “Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next.”

That doesn’t mean Kenobi isn’t happening. It, along with Rian Johnson’s new trilogy, and the film series from the Game of Thrones creators will all still happen. (It is worth noting that Kenobi has never been officially confirmed, but it seems like a sure thing). It just means they are fast-tracking a Lando-centric film.

When I heard the news, my first thought was “What is Ryan Coogler up to?”. He’d be great to helm the flick.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Glover laid out what he wanted from the character in the future:

I really just want to see him, like doing all of that. Still doing anything. Like, I think that would just be fun to just see him just like… Because like, we see him change so much… He’s just like, I think charismatic and people are like, you know what, you should own this city. You should own Cloud City, like that kind of thing, or like winning. So I think it would be just nice to see like, oh, like I’m a General, and now I’m mad at this hotel, and then now, I’m just like… I think that will be just funny but also cool to see like how far charm gets you. Almost like a ‘Catch Me If You Can. A space ‘Catch Me If You Can‘ .

A Catch Me If You Can style Star Wars movie? Sign me up right now. Especially if they could book-end the adventure with an older Lando, while Billy Dee Williams is still around. The possibilities are endless.
