INFINITY WAR Directors Discuss Why They Left One Prominent Character Out

Read Time:2 Minute, 26 Second

Prior to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, there had been plenty of speculation about whether or not Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel would be showing up in the film. First we were told that she wouldn’t be in the film, but rather she’d pop up in Avengers 4 after making her solo debut in early 2019. Then there was an official cast list that went out which included Larson in the cast for Infinity War, and that reignited chatter that she could make a surprise appearance in the film. But now Joe and Anthony Russo have revealed why they decided to leave her out of this one.

No, we want to save her reveal,” Joe said on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, when asked if a Captain Marvel appearance was ever in the cards for Infinity War. “We also wanted to, it was very important to us to commit… we wanted to commit to this ending very hard,” Anthony added. “We didn’t want to go past the ending very much.

And we considered not doing any tags. For that reason,” Joe said. “Then we thought maybe it was too brutal. Everything’s about trying to find balance.

It’s cool to see that they considered not doing any tags, as I had once theorized that they should NOT include tags if they were ending on a cliffhanger, so I like hearing that they’d thought of that.

It should be noted that this isn’t the first time Captain Marvel could have debuted. Kevin Feige once revealed that he and Joss Whedon had considered having her pop up at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and even created the generic special effects shots that would’ve ushered in her arrival at the conclusion of the film at the new Avengers HQ. Ultimately, those effects were instead used to animate Scarlet Witch’s arrival.

What’s also telling about these remarks is that they continue to indirectly reveal that Captain Marvel will be the one who “saves the day” when Avengers 4 comes out next year. While that won’t exactly be shocking for anyone who stayed for the post-credit scene at the end of Infinity War, it’s notable because of how thick the Russos want the veil of secrecy to be around these films…yet they’re openly admitting that showing her would’ve cut down the brutality of the film’s ending; Cause she’s going to be the big savior.

I mean, all of these characters are. It’s hard to talk about the next one,” Joe said. “We’re going to try to protect the secrets of that one the same way that we did on this one.

Whatever you say, Joe. Whatever you say…

How do you think Captain Marvel is going to affect/reverse/fix the crisis we saw at the end of Infinity War?

  1. I don’t want her to save the day. I rather everyone stay gone and Thanos lives happy ever after!
