AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR: Russo Brothers Reveal a Major Character Decision James Gunn Didn’t Help Make

The following article features spoilers from Avengers: Infinity War. You’ve been warned.

One of the many success stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

Gunn helped take one of Marvel’s most obscure properties and turned it into a blockbuster franchise. With that said, you would think Gunn would have a bit more to say when it comes to the fates of the characters he helped make popular.

In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused PodcastAvengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed it was their decision, not Marvel’s, to kill off Gamora and not discussing this decision with Gunn.

Joe Russo: Marvel is very good about allowing every director to have their freedom.

Anthony Russo: We said a lot of story that we wanted to tell. And we present that to Marvel. And we got no pushback from that choice. I’m sure that Kevin has a… we didn’t have a direct conversation with James about the Gamora choice, but I’m sure that certainly Kevin did. And there was no pushback on it, so it was…

With Gunn currently working on a third film in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, one would think he would be brought in on the creative process for Infinity War. Surely, Gunn was made aware of Gamora’s death while Infinity War was being written, so he may not have been completely left out in the cold.

The Russos’ comments do reveal that Marvel’s directors have a bit more power when it comes to the creative process than many originally thought. It sounds like Marvel didn’t have a specific plan for Infinity War until the Russos pitched one.

In the past, Marvel has been accused of being too overbearing when it came to creative freedom in the MCU, which has seen such filmmakers as Patty Jenkins and Edgar Wright leave their respective projects. It seems that Kevin Feige and company has since loosened the reigns a bit on their directors.

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now.

  1. Marvel needed to be more in control as they were establishing the MCU, but now that they’re rolling they can afford to give the directors more and more space to work.
