STAR WARS: EPISODE 9: John Boyega Hints at Time Jump

Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

While many fans are expecting Star Wars: Episode 9 to tie up many of the threads started with 2015’s The Force Awakens, they may also have to prepare for a bit of a time jump.

Speaking with Yahoo! Finance, actor John Boyega briefly talked about the next episodic chapter in the Star Wars saga. Boyega hinted that his character, Finn, will go through some physical changes, indicating some time will pass between The Last Jedi and Episode 9.

I can’t wait to start shooting the next and final leg of the franchise. The first step is growing out my hair, so you can wait for the trailer to see why.

Time jumps aren’t a new concept for Star Wars films, as each film was separated by a number of years. This trend was seemingly dropped with the last few Star Wars flicks, with Rogue One’s ending take place mere minutes before the beginning of A New Hope and The Last Jedi picking up where The Force Awakens left off.

The time jump also gives director J.J. Abrams and writer Chris Terrio a chance to build-up the threat of Kylo Ren and the First Order and give the Resistance time to rebuild itself off-screen. It also gives the pair an opportunity to give a graceful  off-screen exit to Carrie Fisher’s Leia following the passing of Fisher in 2016.

The time jump should certainly give the heroes more time to prepare for what should be an epic final battle with the First Order.

Star Wars: Episode 9 will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
