BOX OFFICE: The Top 5 Is A Marvel Sandwich, And AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Breaks All The Records

Read Time:2 Minute, 21 Second

UPDATE

The weekend actuals for Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War have now arrived, and they actually blew away yesterday’s rosy estimates!

The weekend tallies are now $258M domestic and $383M international, for a worldwide haul of $641M. That’s absolutely incredible. Now read on to see what makes that international figure even more astounding.

ORIGINAL REPORT

Wow. So the dust is still settling after a very impactful weekend at the box office, and the final tallies will come in later today, but the initial numbers that came out yesterday show that Avengers: Infinity War is an absolute juggernaut. The film shattered two of the biggest box office records there are, and the buzz around the film actually brought another Marvel film back into this week’s Top 5!

With roughly $250M stateside and $380M in foreign markets, Avengers: Infinity War has made in the neighborhood of $630M worldwide (remember, we won’t get the precise figures until this afternoon). Those figures combine to break two incredible records: It’s now both the biggest domestic opening, and the best worldwide opening ever!

The previous holders of those titles were Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248M) and Fate of The Furious ($533M), respectively.

What makes the international figure all the more staggering is that Marvel hasn’t even opened Infinity War in the most lucrative foreign market there is: China. Audiences there typically flock to Marvel movies, too. When Avengers: Age of Ultron opened there, it made a staggering $155M. With that in mind, can you imagine what the worldwide tally would’ve been if they’d opened Infinity War there this past weekend? Even if it somehow opened to half of what Ultron did, that would’ve put Infinity War over the $700M mark.

Unbelievable.

The film will make its Chinese debut on May 11. But in the meantime, let’s look at what other records the film broke:

  • Biggest Saturday Ever ($83 Million)
  • Biggest Sunday Ever ($61 Million)

With an A CinemaScore (the industry metric for tracking audience responses), this thing should also have some pretty mighty legs.

Beyond its legs, Infinity War‘s also got some pretty muscular arms, too. Why do I say that? Because it lifted Black Panther back into the Top 5, as people simply couldn’t get enough MCU goodness this weekend. Last week, BP was in eighth place. This week, it’s in fifth as it adds another $4.3M to its ridiculous domestic total of $688,009,489. To date, the film has made $1,331,291,387 worldwide since premiering on February 16th.

Here’s the complete Top 5:

  1. Avengers: Infinity War– $230M
  2. A Quiet Place– $10.6M
  3. I Feel Pretty– $8.1M
  4. Rampage– $7.1
  5. Black Panther– $4.3
