The New VENOM Trailer Is A Dark, Thrilling Ride (WATCH)

Read Time:1 Minute, 37 Second

Earlier this year, Sony released a teaser trailer for Venom and the feedback…wasn’t so great. While there were some who enjoyed the less-is-more approach, and the fact that the film’s promoters were seemingly trying to build up anticipation around the idea of finally seeing Tom Hardy in his full Venom glory down the line, others felt it was all sizzle and no steak.

Well, this new Venom trailer should please both camps.

Hardy himself premiered it at yesterday’s Sony panel at CinemaCon. “Being part of this movie is a dream come true,” Hardy told onlookers. “He’s one of my favorite characters as well.” The actor also shared that one of the things he’s enjoyed the most about making Venom is that it’s a movie his 10 year old son can see.

Aside from Hardy, the film’s extremely talented cast includes Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, and Reid Scott. The film was directed by Ruben Fleischer, who’s perhaps best known for another Harrelson movie: Zombieland.

The trailer definitely makes it feel like it’s a movie that’s off on its own island. Right from the start, by adding the words “In Association With” to the Marvel title card, they imply that there’s a bit of distance between what you’re about to see and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Why? Well, because the film simply isn’t set in the MCU despite centering on Spider-Man’s most iconic frenemy.

In that way, the trailer almost feels sort of old school. It harks back to an age before every superhero film felt like it was one part in a much larger puzzle. Though, if a certain rumor from earlier this year is true, then perhaps its not going to be as isolated a tale as many think it will be.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Venom arrives on October 5th.
