SUICIDE SQUAD 2 Falls Victim To The BIRDS OF PREY
Earlier this week, news broke that Warner Bros lined up Cathy Yan to direct their next Harley Quinn-centric film, Birds of Prey. Interesting choice, needless to say, only because she has just one indie film under her belt but exciting as she will be the first female Asian director ever tapped to direct a superhero film. WINNING!
But as is often the case in life, good news for some can lead to bad news for others…
As a result of this stellar news, Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 is going to have to take a backseat until Joker’s #1 girl is free again. While SS 2 has been developing for a while, has had a director, and cast members hitting the gym to reprise their roles, it looks like Birds of Prey has leapfrogged over it and become a greater priority for the studio. This is all according to Variety’s Justin Kroll.
But let’s get back to the WINNING angle here: Harley Quinn fans have a lot to be excited about these days.
I can’t say that I am all that surprised at the Harley Quinn character gaining as much traction as she has. This was her character’s trajectory when first introduced in the animated series and any medium she graces, she steals the show. It also helps having a fabulous actress like Margot Robbie giving her life.
As for why Birds of Prey suddenly took precedence over the other films? It seems that Christina Hodson’s script blew the studio away, so much so that the Quinn focused flick has been put on the fast track with filming to begin at the end of 2018. Another reason is that the project will also allow the introduction of Batgirl in a supporting role prior to her getting a solo romp. Hodson is also working on the Batgirl script. Who knows? Maybe that one will blow Warner Bros away, too!
Guess you Suicide Squad fans are going to have to wait a little longer. Me, personally, I think this is a good thing.

Just my opinion, but I think the reason is the suicide squad brand was damaged after the poor reception of the movie, so WB wanted Harley to come back minus the baggage
I can definitely see that. It also helps that of all the characters, she was the best portrayed and the most interesting. She can carry a film better than any of the other characters.
