Ron Howard’s Decision to Take Over SOLO Wasn’t Easy

Read Time:2 Minute, 30 Second

If you don’t know, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were the original directors on Solo: A Star Wars Story. Things didn’t work out. They were fired, and Ron Howard was brought in to reshape the movie.

Empire Magazine had an interview with Howard who “felt like he could help” the movie. He elaborates:

“I jumped in as a bit of an adventure really, a kind of cinematic adventure for Ron. It wasn’t long before I had fallen completely in love with it, and I feel passionate and connected to this movie as anything I’ve done. It’s been an exciting, exciting experience. I came in as a true believer in what the movie could be. I really loved the story, I thought the script was strong. I was very excited about the cast. So it was easy for me to be enthusiastic.”

Directors are often called “visionaries” because they have to be. Howard truly saw what this movie could be, and was excited to make it happen. He ended up having to reshoot most of the movie, but was thankful for what Lord and Miller had already contributed.

“If ever there was a completely honest version of creative differences, this is it. I didn’t witness any of it. I came in, just picked up and went. I’m very grateful for much of the work [Lord and Miller] did. Yes, we took some of the sequences in different directions and experimented with them and there’s a great deal of myself in the movie now. But their fingerprints are all over it in ways that I’m very grateful for.”

I don’t think he meant Clint Howard – who is will appear in the film – when he said there is a great deal of himself in the film. But judging by the trailers, there are shots and angles we’ve never seen in a Star Wars movie before. As to how much of the film is his and how much is Lord and Miller’s, Howard said:

“Look, I don’t want to go into it too much because I really don’t want people worrying about how many people worked on the movie. I just think the movie will speak for itself. And these stories are meant to be immersive, something you can lose yourself in.”

It is probably best not to know before hand, because he’s right – looking for technical stuff will always take you out of a movie. It happened with me and Justice League. I was searching for the reshot scenes, and Henry Cavill’s mustache, and didn’t let myself enjoy the adventure at first. Star Wars is best when it is lived in the theater. We already know too much behind the scenes drama.

At first, Ron Howard seemed like a safe, easy choice to me. But now, it feels like he brought something fresh to it that I wouldn’t have expected.

We will see if it all pays off when Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25th.
