New SOLO Character Details, Plus What Films Inspired the STAR WARS STORY

Read Time:2 Minute, 50 Second

The closer we get to May 25th, the more information we get for Solo: A Star Wars Story. The footage we’ve seen thus far paints this movie to be a fun adventure flick. But if you want more information what the spinoff will feel like, Empire has the answers.

Well, Johnathan Kasdan, son of Lawrence Kasdan and co-writer on Solo does actually, and he told it to Empire:

“Part of the challenge is to come up with new, inventive kinds of action we haven’t seen in Star Wars. We often referenced Heat and Thief as high-end criminals doing serious jobs that involve huns and big hijackings.”

Kasdan was specifically referencing the Vandor Heist which has been teased in the trailers, and is one of the big action sequences of the film. That covers one area – plot. But what about character development? We’ve got you covered there too.

StarWars.com updated their character bios for the movie, and ComicBook.com laid them out quite nicely:

Han Solo – Times were tough under Imperial rule. Han, a street thief, worked for a notorious gang on Corellia, stealing goods and cutting deals on behalf of an ill-tempered crime boss.

ChewbaccaA mighty Wookiee nearly two centuries old, Chewbacca fell upon hard times during this age of the expanding Empire.

Lando Calrissian Smooth and sophisticated, Captain Lando Calrissian stood ready to retire from the life of a smuggler and instead become a full-time gambler (or, “sportsman” as he called it), shuffling from card game to card game across the galaxy.

Qi’RaAt 18 years of age, young Qi’ra is already enmmeshed in a life of crime, working for a gang on Corellia.

Tobias BeckettBeckett is a survivor, always quietly working out angles to come out ahead. He’s assembled a team of specialized scoundrels to carry out risky but profitable heists.

ValA no-nonsense and occasionally prickly woman who is a crack shot with a blaster rifle, Val may be the most even-headed and capable member of Tobias Beckett’s ragtag crew of scoundrels.

L3-37A “self-made droid” built from astromech and protocol parts, L3-37 is an enlightened navigator who cares deeply about droid rights.

Rio DurantRio Durant has carried out dangerous operations alongside scoundrel Tobias Beckett for years. The good-natured Ardennian pilot is up for any challenge.

There are few things to unpack here. First, Lando was nearly retired from being a smuggler, I assume Han pulls him back in. Qi’ra is supposed to be 18 when we see her in at least the first part of the movie, I’m not sure if Emilia Clarke can pull that off. Val is described as “prickly” (I’ve never heard a male character described that way before…) and Rio, who we get a brief glimpse of in the trailer, is part of Beckett’s gang.

Those descriptions are good enough to give us some insights on who the characters are, but are vague enough to let them be discovered on screen better. My favorite part is from Beckett’s bio that says he is “always quietly working out angles to come out ahead.” Han and Lando do that too. I wonder if Beckett will turn into a secondary villain of sorts, when Han and Lando try to best him.

We will find out soon enough, when Solo: A Star Wars Story opens on May 25, 2018.
