Surprising Twist! Mark Hamill ‘Loves’ Something About STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI!

Read Time:3 Minute, 10 Second

I know, I know, my caption makes me sound like a bit of a jerk, but come on now, Mark Hamill has been all critique and no love as of late. The fact we didn’t get to see Luke’s reaction to Han’s demise. The possibility of there being too much Star Wars overflowing the fans and then, of course, the fact that he may not want to return to the franchise at all. While I do agree with the Luke reaction scene missing from The Last Jedi (as it was 17 freaking seconds that could have been tacked on for CRYING OUT LOUD), Hamill has been quite vocal and not shy at all to voice his concerns, critiques and overall feelings for the direction of the space saga.

With that being said, in a surprising bit of news, Hamill isn’t all critiques, jabs and depressing realities. He actually LOVED something about The Last Jedi. Interestingly enough, he loves the exact same thing that I, personally, enjoyed about the film. That was the broom boy ending. Ultimately, if you were kind of glazed over at this point in the movie or just half watching, you would miss a pretty massive commentary on the galaxy far, far away. That being when the boy stretched out his hand and the broom forced its way into his hands. It didn’t tip over, it didn’t fall, nor did he grab it… at least, not in the physical sense. Broom boy force pulled the broom towards him. That small gesture… those three seconds of movement say SO much about this universe.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Hamill revealed his love for The Last Jedi‘s ending with Broom Boy, who’s character name is Temiri Blagg. While there were viewers who happened to take some issue with this ending (clearly, me not being one of them) Hamill actually loved it for what it implies in the grand scheme of things.

“What I love particularly was – and they didn’t have to do this because the movie’s over – all of a sudden you cut to the stable and there’s that little boy, he puts out his hand and the broom comes to him. It’s so subtle, the first time I saw it I thought he just took it, but if you look he puts his hand out and it moves over for him, implying that yeah, she’s [Rey’s] the last Jedi… until the next Jedi. It’ll go on forever, believe me. Long after both of us are gone they’ll be making these films from here into eternity.”

“The Force Is Strong With This One…”

So, while I understand his feeling of over saturation of the franchise, Hamill clearly wants to see Star Wars continue on. With this ending, it just shows that the Star Wars-verse (My term. Yes, you can use this term as well) is bigger than we know and imagine. Star Wars goes beyond the Skywalker family and that is okay. For those that read the novels, that played the games (KOTOR, FTW!), we fully know how vast the Star Wars universe is. Let’s not pigeon hole ALL films to be about the Skywalker clan. Maybe there are some force sensitive children out there in the universe that have no direct ties to other main line characters.

That is not a bad thing. On the contrary, that’s a great thing. It’s a metaphor for reality that says you don’t need to have powerful and amazing parents to be amazing yourself. Something that not just adults should take solace in, but something children who watch Star Wars now should grow up knowing. That the Force could be in you… Skywalker or not.
