AQUAMAN To Arrive A Week Earlier In UK, Could A Stateside Shift Be Next?
While we have yet to see anything from Aquaman, our friends across the pond can expect the film sooner than expected. DigitalSpy had the scoop, which Warner Bros confirmed – the release date for Aquaman in the U.K. is now December 14, instead of the originally schedule December 21. This marks the third time the film has shifted its release date.
As of right now, the release date for the U.S. is still the 21st. It could stay that way, there are a ton of movies that open earlier in Europe. Originally, Avengers: Infinity War was the same way – April 27th in the U.K, and May 4th in the U.S., until they changed it to April 27th for the entire world.
While that was most likely a spoiler prevention measure, I hope it begins a trend that sticks – we all get the movies at the same time. The culture of motion picture releases is changing. Between Netflix, Amazon and other digital service distributions that bypass the theater, to less time between theatrical runs and Digital HD releases, the rules are being rewritten. Maybe Aquaman can continue that trend, and we can see James Wan’s vision at the same time.
Something else to consider here is the competition Aquaman will face on either date. Currently, December 21st is also when the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee is set to release (Did you know that the writer of that film will now be writing Batgirl for DC?). Meanwhile, on December 14th Sony will be releasing its animated Marvel adventure, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
So it’ll have some serious genre competition regardless of which weekend it opens, but switching to December 14 would at least give it some more time before Mary Poppins Returns starts gobbling up family audiences on December 25.
What are your thoughts on staggered release dates? It makes containing spoilers harder in this day and age of the internet, and people seem to be increasingly aware of that. And which competitor do you think poses the biggest threat to the King of Atlantis- Bumblebee or Spider-Man? Let us know!
