READY PLAYER ONE Scores $3.8 Million Opening on Wednesday Night

Always bet on Steven Spielberg.

According to Variety, Warner Bros.’ Ready Player One opened to $3.8 million during preview showings on Wednesday night. The film, based on the novel by Ernest Cline, is on track to make $45 million over the Easter weekend and it would put it over the top of fellow new releases God’s Not Dead 3 and Tyler Perry’s Acrimony.

The Spielberg-directed flick cost an estimated $175 million to make and, with a good critical reception and solid word-of-mouth already developing, it should do well in the US and pull in big numbers overseas.

The sci-fi adventure stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance.
