Critics Agree: READY PLAYER ONE Is A Great Adventure!
Ready Player One is set to arrive in theaters everywhere tomorrow, and it’s been a topic of much debate how the film will do- both in terms of acceptance by audiences and in terms of box office returns. We’d heard that the film’s premiere at SXSW a couple of weeks ago was a resounding success, but there was no telling if critics were going to love this film or not. The book it’s based on has faced some significant backlash, and folks unfamiliar with book have remarked that the trailers make the film seem like a bunch of unrelated, nostalgic pandering.
Well, now that there have been multiple screenings for critics, we can safely report back: They’re digging Ready Player One. A lot.
With just about 100 reviews tallied on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have given the Warner Bros. film an aggregate approval rating of 84%, making it “Certified Fresh.”
The Critics Consensus for Ready Player One reads as follows:
“Ready Player One is a sweetly nostalgic thrill ride that neatly encapsulates Spielberg’s strengths while adding another solidly engrossing adventure to his filmography.“
Our own Mario-Francisco Robles attended a press screening in New York last night, and his full, non-spoiler review will be up later today. As someone who recently read the Ernest Cline novel that the film is based on, and who’s spent plenty of time discussing why he hopes the film is great on RTF’s two podcasts (The Revengers and El Fanboy), he had a very deep emotional investment going into this one, so stay tuned for his published thoughts.
For those unfamiliar with the plot for Ready Player One, here’s an official synopsis:
“The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.”
Ready Player One begins its run with preview screenings tonight.
