Fox Has Delayed X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX And Has Pushed THE NEW MUTANTS Back Even Further

Read Time:1 Minute, 42 Second

Two of Fox’s upcoming X-Men films are going to be delayed, and the wait for each has now become fairly substantial. The movies in question are Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Josh Boone’s The New Mutants. Fans hoping to check out the next entry in the mainline X franchise will now have to wait until next year, and when it comes to New Mutants this is now the second time it’s been moved.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which marks the feature directorial debut of longtime X-Men producer and writer Simon Kinberg, has been shifted from November 2nd of this year to the same frame as the original Deadpool: Valentine’s Day Weekend. The film will arrive February 14th, 2019.

The New Mutants was once set to premiere mere weeks from now on April 13th. Then it got moved to February 22nd of next year, and now the film has been pushed back a second time with its new release date being August 2nd, 2019.

We’re not going to speculate about why these delays have taken place, but- especially in the case of The New Mutants– the optics here aren’t awesome. A 15 month delay implies that the film still needs a lot of work, but who knows? Movies have been delayed before and turned out pretty great. It’s actually kind of comforting to know that Fox would rather delay these films than rush them into theaters. It’s possible they learned how foolish a move that can be because of what happened with X-Men 3: The Last Stand.

No good comes from rushing to meet a release date.

We’ve reached out to Fox for a comment on these delays, but- as of now- they’ve offered no comment. We’ll keep you up to date if that changes. In the mean time, we think it’s important not to panic. In times like these, it’s always good news when a studio would rather delay a film to give it the time and effort it needs than crank out a mediocre movie.

  1. I would assume if either/both films were really great (or the studio had confidence in them), they’d release them as soon as possible irrespective of the merger. I think the obvious conclusion is the correct one here…both films haven’t impressed in the testing phase and need substantial work. Doesn’t bode well.
