PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING Dethrones BLACK PANTHER, But Will Rely On Overseas Figures To Turn A Profit

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

Well, it finally happened. It may have taken six weeks, but somebody finally kicked T’Challa out of his throne. Mind you, they did it with wounded leg as they limped across the finish line. We’re talking about Pacific Rim: Uprising, as the $150 million movie opened to less-than-stellar $28 million this weekend, which was enough to top Black Panther‘s $16.6 million.

But while that domestic tally is nothing to write home about, Pacific Rim: Uprising did some impressive numbers overseas- highlighting the idea that foreign audiences will make or break this movie.

The film has made $122.5 million in 61 international markets so far. China alone, which is hands-down the most important foreign market, threw $65 million into Uprising‘s coffers. This means that, worldwide, the film has already met its $150 million price tag. Of course, conventional wisdom dictates that a film has to double its budget before he can be considered profitable, which means turning a profit is going to be no easy task.

Guillermo del Toro’s original Pacific Rim topped out at $411M worldwide, after a $37M opening weekend, which was barely enough to warrant a sequel in the first place. So the Steven S. DeKnight directed Pacific Rim: Uprising really does have an uphill battle ahead of it when you consider that it’s a sequel to a property that wasn’t a worldwide smash to begin with, and that fans gave it a B Cinemascore. The original film garnered an A-.

We can’t judge the film, as no one on the RTF staff has seen it. But what about you? Have you checked out Uprising yet? Do you plan on it? What did you think? Let us know if you think the film is getting a raw deal at the box office, or if it deserves to collapse and disappear in the coming weeks.
