JUSTICE LEAGUE Costume Designer Talks Superman’s Black Suit
In the build-up to Justice League, there were speculation and rumors surrounding Superman’s return and if we would see the black suit that the character wore when he returned from the dead in the comics.
When the film released, there was no black suit, but, when the film released on video, we got a short scene of Clark Kent returning to the Krytonian ship to get his costume. We see him contemplate choosing the black suit, until his eye catches the iconic red and blue suit the character is known for.
Speaking with Digital Spy, Justice League costume designer Michael Wilkinson talked about the inclusion of the black suit and why the decision was made to go with the red and blue suit instead.
The black suit is something that has fascinated us as filmmakers from the get-go. We saw a glimpse of it in the nightmare sequence from Man of Steel when Superman was wading through skulls, and also in the deleted scene from Justice League where you do see Clark walking through the spaceship and it’s teased in the background.
When we were prepping Justice League, at first it seemed that it might be a logical choice for the look of Superman when he’s resurrected. Zack is extremely respectful and passionate about the depiction of Superman in comic books and graphic novels, and traditionally when he is resurrected, he is in the black suit.
But as the tone of the film developed and we were in pre-production, the filmmakers felt that the classic red and blue suit seemed more appropriate to our story and our script. It seemed that a more positive, upbeat image of Superman was what was needed – the idea of hope and that the world could in fact be saved was important, so that’s the direction that we went.
While the idea of ditching the black suit makes sense, the scene itself would’ve been a great addition in the final film. It would’ve given the fans a nice little Easter egg, but also provided a nice transition from the “brooding” Superman we saw in Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice to the “hopeful and confident” Superman that we saw in the League’s final battle with Steppenwolf.
Hopefully, in the future, Warner Bros. will release a cut of the film with the scene added back in as it’s a great character moment for Cavill’s Man of Steel.
Justice League is available now on home video.
