HOT RUMOR: SPIDER-MAN To Battle A “Bond Girl Type” Villain

Our spidey-senses are tingling and that can only mean that we have a HUGE Spider-Man scoop on which character might square off against Tom Holland in the next movie!

A few months back it was reported that the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel would be looking to shoot internationally, either in Germany or in the UK. We can now confirm that for the simple fact that we think we know what type of villain(s) Peter Parker will be facing in the much anticipated follow up.

Our buddies over at That Hashtag Show have scooped out that Marvel Studios and Sony are currently seeking a female “Bond girl” type between the ages of 20-30 years old. So who may this international mysterious woman be? It can be one of these two options:

JESSICA DREW or SILVER SABLE

Jessica Drew’s origin is similar to Captain America, in that she was injected with an experimental serum that gave her superpowers. Okay, sure, that’s pretty much the only similarity, but still: Jessica Drew was the daughter of a geneticist and when she got sick due to radiation, he injected her with a serum he developed with spider DNA.

After developing her powers, including super strength, bioelectric shocks, and a sort of flight (she can “glide” through the air), she was recruited by Hydra to be an assassin and spy for them. Even though she rebelled against them in her first mission (to assassinate Nick Fury), she would later join Hydra again as a double-agent for SHIELD. (And then be replaced by the Skrull queen Veranke.) And after that, she would pull double duty as an Avenger and a member of SHIELD, often joining the Secret Avengers (SHIELD’s black ops Avengers team) on missions. At one point, Black Widow even took Spider-Woman under her wing.

Hell, she’s been on the Avengers. Multiple teams, actually. So even though Sony could build their own Spider-Man Cinematic Universe, they could still incorporate her into the Avengers easily enough — something I don’t really see happening that easily with Silver Sable.

Jessica Drew isn’t the only Spider-Woman out there. Aside from Julia Carpenter (who became Spider-Woman during the first Secret Wars) and Mattie Franklin, there’s also currently Cindy Moon, who goes by Silk, who was bitten by the same spider as Peter Parker, and Gwen Stacy from Earth-65, who goes by Spider-Woman by whom fans know better as Spider-Gwen. She comes from a world where she was bitten instead of Peter. Her world is populated with familiar characters who are a bit different, like mob boss Matt Murdock or police detective Frank Castle.

Sony could easily tell stories about both of those characters and then, just like the comics, bring all three Spider-Women together for a crossover. They could even go for a Spider-Verse crossover where they try to incorporate all versions of Spider-Man from every reality — but if that seems too daunting (and might dilute the Spider-Man brand), a Spider-Women movie might make more sense. And it would be awesome.

Silver Sable — whose secret identity is the wonderful “Silver Sablinova” — was introduced in 1985’s The Amazing Spider-Man No. 265, where she has consistently been a globe-trotting mercenary for hire and part-time hunter of war criminals, especially Nazis.

Sable hails from the fictional European nation of Symkaria (which is, coincidentally, next-door neighbor to Doctor Doom’s Latveria, for those trying to draw a map of Marvel’s fictional countries), and she’s not just its most famous citizen — the profits from her mercenary activities, and those of her team of operatives the Wild Pack, reportedly drive the country’s entire economy, which is either a sign of her success as a mercenary, or a poor commentary on the state of the Symkarian economy.

A relatively minor figure inside the Marvel Universe, Sable has nonetheless worked with Spider-Man, Captain America, the Avengers, and a whole host of other, more famous super-characters throughout her comic book career before her seeming death in the 2012 storyline “Ends of the Earth.” (This being comics, of course, there’s more than a little uncertainty about whether or not she actually died during that story; either way, she could always return at a later date.)

It’s very cool to see that after the success of Black Panther’s fictional country of WAKANDA becoming so popular, we’re going to start to see more and more of the comic book classic fictional locations pop up. Is Latveria next?

Additionally, it seems that the international female agent, whoever she is, will have some help in the field as the studio is also looking to cast a male (40-60) and a female (40-49) in lead roles as agents. The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming will begin production this June ahead of a July 5, 2019, release.
